PEMDAS Order of operations

Remember the phrase… Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Remembering the phrase “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” will help you do the steps in the Order of Operations in the correct order.

Which means… Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction Start at the left and work right when doing multiplication and division

Example This is our problem. First we do what is inside parentheses Next we do the exponents. Finally, addition and subtraction in any order. Since division comes first, we do that followed by the multiplication.

Example: There are no parentheses so exponents are done first (blue) followed by division (red), then multiplication, and finally addition and subtraction. If you always follow the Order of Operations, your answers will come out right.
