1 Vibration: A repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down motion. Energy: The ability to do work.
Essential Question: How does data collected provide evidence that the amount of energy a wave carries determines the properties of a wave?
WAVES Wave motion allows a transfer of energy without a transfer of matter.
Wave Properties Students will be able to Explain wave structure Contrast transverse and longitudinal waves Describe properties of a wave.
Waves What are waves?. ENERGY  Disturbance that transfers ENERGY through different mediums WAVES.
What are waves? a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. Classified as either 1. Mechanical- require a medium 2. Electromagnetic- do not.
Energy Transfer - Waves. Waves A wave is any disturbance that transmits energy through matter or empty space. Energy can be carried away from it’s source.

Properties of Waves.  Since the waves move back and forth objects move up and down. Imagine riding a water wave. You move up and down because the wave.
Year 1 Science 6.P.1.1. What are waves? “Moving energy” Formed when a force causes vibrations through space or matter Vibrations form wavelike disturbances.
Waves and Wave Properties. A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from place to place. A wave does NOT carry matter with it! It just moves the matter.
Amplitude The max. distance the particles move from the “rest position” to: The more energy a wave has → The greater its amplitude Compression or rarefaction.
What is sound?* Sound begins with a vibration. Sounds travel in waves through a medium.

Waves Wave properties

Electromagnetic Spectrum All electromagnetic waves are transverse.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum Light is an electromagnetic wave.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

FM radio waves have: Shorter wavelength Higher frequency Higher energy Than AM radio waves.

Light travels in electromagnetic waves

Sound travels in longitudinal waves. Wavelength The wavelength of a longitudinal (compression) wave is the distance from compression to compression OR rarefaction to rarefaction. The wavelength of a transverse wave is the distance from crest to crest OR trough to trough. Sound travels in longitudinal waves.

Frequency – the number of wavelengths that pass by a point each second. One second The SI unit for frequency is the Hertz (Hz). One Hertz represents one wavelength per second.

Relationship between wavelength, frequency, and energy

Amplitude

The more energy a wave carries, the higher the amplitude. Amplitude and Energy The more energy a wave carries, the higher the amplitude.
