Warm Up (From Article) Where do plants do PHOTOSYNTHESIS? What are the two steps called? What is the main product that gets created called?

Photosynthesis Notes: Divide your paper into three columns (make the middle column the biggest) Photosynthesis Notes

LABEL YOUR COLUMNS Photosynthesis Notes Topic Notes Extra Info

What is it? Who/what does it? TOPIC: NOTES: Photosynthesis is the process of converting sunlight into usable food energy Any Questions? Any memory clues? Write them in the extra info column Who/what does it? Photosynthesis is done by AUTOTROPHS – mainly plants, but also protists and some bacteria Review– What’s an autotroph? Write that in the extra info column

Where does it occur? CHLOROPLAST CHLOROPHYLL TOPIC: NOTES: Photosynthesis occurs in the CHLOROPLASTS, which are found in the green parts of plants Questions? Extra info? What are the green parts of plants? A tiny green organelle (cell part) that contains chlorophyll CHLOROPLAST What does the suffix PLAST mean? A pigment that absorbs light wave-lengths. It reflects GREEN light CHLOROPHYLL

Chlorophyll reflects green light (that’s why leaves are green!) Chloroplast Chlorophyll reflects green light (that’s why leaves are green!)

Overall Reaction Two Steps: TOPIC: NOTES: Light Dependent Reaction Extra info? GLUCOSE! Where have we seen/heard about that before? Two Steps: Light Dependent Reaction Calvin Cycle Extra info? Make an inference– what does LIGHT DEPENDENT mean?

LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTION TOPIC: NOTES: LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTION Water + Light= Oxygen + ATP + Hydrogen Extra info? Write that using chemical symbols Sunlight provides enough energy to split water into separate hydrogen and oxygen molecules. ATP is also created. Happens in the thylakoids Extra info? Can this reaction happen without sunlight?

LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTION TOPIC: NOTES: LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTION (continued) Oxygen diffuses out of the plant and into the air we breathe! Hydrogen and ATP are needed in the next reaction, the Calvin Cycle NADP+ is a hydrogen carrier. When it is NADPH, it has picked up the hydrogen and is ready to deliver it to the calvin cycle NADPH

CALVIN CYCLE TOPIC: NOTES: AKA LIGHT INDEPENDENT REACTION Hydrogen + ATP + Carbon Dioxide = Glucose Extra info? Where does the hydrogen come from? The ATP? The carbon dioxide? The Calvin cycle makes sugar (glucose) from carbon dioxide and the hydrogen from the light dependent reaction. ATP powers the reaction. Happens in the stroma Extra info? Can this reaction happen without sunlight?

OVERALL INPUTS OVERALL OUTPUTS TOPIC: NOTES: LIGHT, WATER, CARBON DIOXIDE OVERALL OUTPUTS OXYGEN, SUGAR INTERMEDIATES Intermediates are things made in one reaction, then used up in the next. The intermediates are ATP and NADPH

BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION TOPIC: NOTES: BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATION 6CO2 +6H2O + sunlight = C6H12O6 + 6O2 What’s with the 6 in front of some of the compounds? Try putting this into words!

Questions Which stage of photosynthesis uses… Which stage creates … Sunlight? Water? Carbon Dioxide? Which stage creates … Oxygen Glucose
