EU STEM Coalition What is it? Objectives Members Network of national STEM platforms Objectives Facilitate the exchange of best practices Support the development of national STEM strategies Members STEM platforms European partners National lead partners For those of you who are new to the EU STEM Coalition, Let me give you a brief introduction. EU STEM is a network of national platforms That focus on … Together, we form STEM EU with the objective to Facilitate the exchange of best practices between ourselves And to support the development of new strategies on a national level. Members consist of the National STEM platforms European partners, such as … And national lead partners, such as … How did it all start?

No ‘one size fits all’ model Estonian Research Council (EE) Obuda University (HU) CSR Ukraine (UA) This is based on the thought that there is NO ‘one size fits all’ organisational model. There is an: Estonian Research Council (EE) Government of Catalonia (ES) Obuda University (HU) CSR Ukraine (UA) And perhaps a few more of you that I haven’t mentioned? (Eventueel naar het scherm kijken en zeggen: So we’re all different, but connected). What we do have in common, are some key characteristics: Regionalised implementation schemes Integrated approach, rapid scaling And we all rely heavily on the … Government of Catalonia (ES)

Triple helix approach. For… without eduction, there would be a shortage of knowledge without the business, we wouldn’t be able to train and employ them without governments, we …

Transferability of the approach Technology Pact Estonian Technology Pact (2012) Flemish STEM Pact, (development STEM platform) Danish Technology Pact (TBA by Ministry of Business in fall 2017) National programmes Jet-Net.dk, based on Dutch Jet-Net programme Platform-approach Development Hungarian STEM platform Taskforce meetings & informal support I’d like to conclude the first part of this presentation by sharing some best practices that have been proven successful when transferring them abroad… The Jet-Net example Jet-Net (Youth and Technology Network Netherlands) is a joint initiative of leading Dutch technology companies and secondary (pre-college) schools. The programme aims to increase the amount of students that choose STEM through one-on-one school-company partnerships. The programme was founded by five leading companies (Shell, Philips, AkzoNobel, Unilver and DSM). Today, the programme involves over 90 technology companies, reaching around 60.000 students a year and covering around 40% of all pre-university secondary schools. A Danish version of the Jet-Net programme (Jet-Net.dk) was successfully launched in 2012, growing to 60 companies in less than three years.

Lessons learnt & role EU STEM Coalition ‘Bottom-up’ systemic approach Scientix / Ingenious Sustainable network approach Taskforce meetings & informal support Building on existing networks and initiatives Involving the entire ‘triple helix’ And last but not least, some lessons learnt ... First of all, you need a ‘bottom up’ systematic approach, adjusted to national / regional context and objectives Examples of this would be Scientix and Ingenious? Secondly, you need a sustainable approach, which involves … Thirdly, you need taskforce meetings and informal support.

EU STEM Coalition: medium-term goals How can the EU STEM Coalition contribute to an upscaled EU STE(A)M Coalition? Direct support to develop national STEM strategies Increase scalability by leveraging existing networks Facilitate EU-level exchange of best practices and impact assessment Let’s start with the objectives. Moet je niet eerst wat zeggen over de verschillende national goals en dat jullie die niet bepalen, maar dat jullie wel kunnen helpen? So the question arises: How can the EU STEM Coalition contribute To an upscaled coalition, both in size and focus. We can do so by… Ofcourse, we can’t do this alone. We will need to involve regional…
