IMPacting ACute Trauma: Does a brief preventive intervention affect PTSD outcomes? (IMPACT) Co-PI: Ben Coopwood, MD, FACS Clinical Coordinator: Katherine Houck, MSSW, LCSW, LCDC University Medical Center at Brackenridge Co-PI: Stacey Stevens Manser, PhD The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work

Findings AIM 1: To assess the prevalence of patients at-risk for the development of PTSD. Symptoms at bedside Met PTSD criteria: 90 day Ratios (n=91) 1 34.6% 9/26 2 48.2% 14/29 3 57.6% 15/26 4 90% 9/10 Among 1,541 patients in acute care, 650 were screened. Among those, 26% had 1 or more traumatic symptoms at bedside. Intervention and Control participants in intervention were not significantly different by demographic variables or trauma screening. AIM 2: To implement and assess the effectiveness of a BPI to prevent development of PTSD. *control and intervention are equivalent AIM 3: To analyze disparities of health outcomes, treatment seeking-behaviors and barriers to care among study participants through analysis of study specific and trauma registry data. 90 days post injury: 24% sought treatment for trauma symptoms and 28% asked for help in seeking mental health provider = 52% desiring traumatic stress treatment caused by injury. Barriers to accessing care: no providers; no transportation; no insurance or funds to pay for treatment; focus on ongoing rehabilitation; and, didn’t think they needed it.

Policy and Practice Implications Trauma training and network development among practitioners Connection of Medicine and Social Work Timing may be key: the brief preventive intervention needs further testing, but outreach and assessment after discharge is needed Potential inclusion of PTSD screening in hospital nursing assessment

Future Research/Collaboration Study will provide pilot data to seek other funding sources for a larger, potentially multi-site study with extended follow up interviews Collaboration among study staff at UMCB and UT School of Social Work Seton currently piloting PTSD outpatient services
