APNIC IPv6 pools and delegation practice Guangliang Pan

APNIC IPv6 delegation history 1999-07-01 IANA made its first IPv6 allocation 2001:0200::/23 to APNIC 1999-08-13 APNIC made its first IPv6 allocation 2001:200::/35 to WIDE project Japan 1999-07-01 to 2006-10-2, IANA allocations were based on /23 size block. RIRs started with a /35 minimum allocation (later change to /32 from 1 July 2002) from a reserved /29 in sequence allocation 2006-10-03 IANA allocated 2400:0000::/12 to APNIC 2006-10-10 APNIC made the last /32 sequence allocation 2006-10-20 APNIC started the sparse allocations from the 2400:0000::/12 pool

APNIC IPv6 sequence allocation pools Normal /32 allocations were made from /23 pools before Oct 2006, each /23 can have up to 64 allocations and each allocation was reserved up to /29. * Some allocations are larger than /29 in those ranges ** 2404:0000::/23 received on 19 Jan 2006. It is part of the 2400::/12 Dates received from IANA Pools Number of allocations Made from each pool 1999-07-01 2001:0200::/23 64 2002-05-02 2001:0C00::/23 54 * 2003-01-01 2001:0E00::/23 61 * 2004-06-11 2001:4400::/23 41 * 2006-01-19 2404:0000::/23 ** 26 *

APNIC IPv6 sparse allocation pools In Oct 2006, sparse allocation started. Normal /32 allocations are made from 2400::/13 (allocations can grow up to /25 at this stage) Very large allocations are made from 2408::/13 (allocations can grow up to /17 at this stage)

Additional pools APNIC received a few allocations that are larger than /23 from IANA to meet some large requests in our region before 2006. 2001:8000::/19 2001:A000::/20 2001:B000::/20

Special Ranges APNIC reserved some ranges for special purposes. 2001:0DC0::/27 Used for Critical Infrastructure 2001:0DE8::/29 Used for Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) 2001:0DF0::/29 Used for Portable assignments 2001:0DE0::/29 Used for experimental purposes 2001:0DB8::/32 Used for documentation purposes 2001:07FA::/32 Used for IXP assignments before 2007
