Combining Simple Sentences using ‘bridge’ words (the ‘FANBOYS’)

What are the FANBOYS? The acronym FANBOYS is a way to remember these ‘bridge’ words: F or A nd N or B ut O r Y et S o

Why Use Them? What’s their purpose? Sophisticated writers use FANBOYS to join two independent clauses (simple sentences) together. Are each of these two clauses a sentence? (Do they have a subject and a verb?) 1. Each element contains identical atoms. 2. Each element is listed on the Periodic Table of Elements. If you answered “yes,” you can use one of the FANBOYS to join them together.

How? Place the comma at the end of the 1st independent clause; next write the FANBOY; finally write the 2nd independent clause. Each element contains identical atoms, and is listed on the Periodic Table. Protons are positively charged, electrons are negatively charged, so atoms are neutral. All matter is made of atoms, but the atom composition of Earth’s crust is different from the atom composition of living things. All matter is made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, for it is made of atoms. Neutron particles are not positively charged, nor are they negatively charged. An atomic particle’s charge can be positive, or it can be negative. An element contains atoms, yet each element is made of different atoms.

Your turn - Combine the independent clauses using FANBOYS Set 1 (for) All atoms are neutral. Protons are positive and electrons are negative. Hot water distributes dye more quickly than cold water. Set 4 (nor) Neutrons are not positive. Neutrons are not negative. Set 5 (but) Atoms want to be neutral overall. Atoms sometimes lose electrons. Set 6 (yet) There are just over 100 elements. There are millions of substances.
