Section 3 Explain the affect of the Gold Rush on America Chapter 7: The Changing United States (1820 – 1850) Section 3 Explain the affect of the Gold Rush on America Gold & California

Gold in America The English always hoped to find gold in North America Spanish conquistadors found an abundance of gold in South America English settlers came to North America to find gold Of course they did not Lewis & Clark also found no signs of gold on their adventure This all led to the conclusion that gold did not exist in North America

Gold Rush 1848, gold was discovered in California at Sutter’s Mill At this time only 20,000 people lived in California However that changed quickly People stayed to mine silver

Gold Rush The “Gold Rush” started in 1848, however with slow communication and slow travel many moved to California in 1849 70,000 came to California Miners from all over rushed to California to get rich they became known as the forty-niners With over 200,000 people in 1850 California became the 31st state Many did not make it is miners, but their was plenty of opportunities now available in California
