PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER Caren Burns, Granite Education Association Board of Directors William Spiegel, UEA UniServ Specialist WILLIAM

WHY ORGANIZE? Transformational Organizing One on Ones Building Mapping “Never do for others what they can do for themselves.”– Iron Rule of Organizing One on Ones Building Mapping Digital Organizing SO, NOW WHAT? WILLIAM Overview of what we talked about!

TABLE TALK/ POPCORN OUT What was your take home about Transformational Organizing. What tools do you see your UniServ/Local taking utilizing? Building Mapping One on One Digital Organizing What “Ah-has” did you have? WILLIAM Then 15 table share. Contact William– and I will work with your UniServ Director to make sure you have what you need for a successful local campaign. POPCORN OUT— Each table has three popcorn kernels; either write on a kernel how you can fold it into your current new teacher efforts, or a resource you need. Have each table share out then tack to the popcorn wall.

In this session we will… Explore Theory of Change and explore our own local’s goals. Move forward with our Theory of Change through doing a SWOT analysis. And plan out our own Back to School Campaign.

THEORY OF CHANGE What is Theory of Change? SWOT: Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats CAREN Theory of change: Statement for you and your organization: Remember the Golden Circle– Kathleen Cheshire!!!! Being genuine. Before you talk to someone you have to have the “why do I feel like this important!?’ Looks at the end result for social change! SWOT– is a tool to organize how you are going to change or get to your THEORY CHANGE. Remember the big picture. DATA:

Table Talk (10 min) Does your local/UniServ have a mission or Theory of Change? What are your organizations long term goals? WILLIAM Table talk then share out!

TABLE EXERCISE; OUR MAP TO CANDYLAND! Strengths- How are we succeeding? What are our greatest strengths? Weaknesses (Growth)? What are your opportunities for improvement? Opportunities? How can we use our strengths to improve weaknesses? Threats? What external forces could propose a challenge? +DATA How will we measure our impact? CAREN 20 min Model before having participants share. Granite example: Teacher’s in crisis because of turn around schools. Focus on your strengths Data: When you are done playing candy land you have your person at the end… so how do you measure success? May not always be number based. “We have teachers who feel more supported in their profession.” Back to GOLDEN CIRCLE They would understand the “why of the work”

BACK TO SCHOOL CAMPAIGN: THE CHALLENGE ONE on ONE with EVERY NEW TEACHER! Why would we do this? How do we do this? WILLIAM Some districts hiring more than 500 new teachers last school year, half of whom were brand new to the profession. Some districts brining in more than 200 teachers from out of state– Fox 13 report Less students seeking teaching degrees through universities. 800 classroom without licensed educators; 400 ARL/ 400 Student Interns! One on one conversations come into play! Opportunity for AR, leaders, members UEA staff to meet the new teachers and talk with them about OUR investment in their success. -- Is identify interests of new teachers. --Centered around teaching and learning. NEA has developed a digital communication that will follow up on the first contact– with reports that will be brought back to local affiliates for future organizing work.

THE CARD WILLIAM Opportunities for One on Ones THR Caren’s example as a new teacher!

TABLE TALK (15 min) MONTH TO MONTH PLANNING CAREN Granite Example of month to month organizing. OR think of it as FALL WINTER SPRING

TABLE EXERCISE: STRATEGIES TABLE WORK GOALS: What is your Theory of Change? Who is the lead person? Are there monies that can we requested? WILLIAM

TABLE TALK/ POPCORN OUT How can the Back to School Campaign be folded into your local’s current efforts for new teachers? What resources does your local need or is interested in? (UniServ Training, AR/ABL Training to do one on ones?) WILLIAM Then 15 table share.
