“The Sniper” Group Analysis Questions

Group Analysis Questions: What happens to the old woman who informs on the sniper? Why does the author portray the spy as an old woman? Explain your thinking. Why doesn’t O’Flaherty give our protagonist a name? What is the point of this? How does it connect to the overall message of the story? Why do you think this? What major theme has O’Flaherty been trying to get across in this story? How has he used the ending to bring into his way of thinking? Explain. Provide evidence. Read the ending closely. What does the last sentence mean? What else could the last sentence mean? What is the purpose of ambiguity and irony in the story—that is, how does it affect you as a reader? What is the overall tone that the author conveys in this story? Provide evidence to support your answer. How does the author use imagery to create mood in this story? Provide examples for support.
