ELA, 3/3/18

Warm-up, 3/5 Write the simple subject and simple predicate (verb) in each sentence. Some people collect stamps from one country only. Others save stamps from around the world. Stamp collectors like rare or unusual stamps. 2. Define rabble – WOD (Word of the Day).

WORD OF THE DAY….Rabble a disorganized or confused collection of things a disorganized or disorderly crowd of people, like a mob The university chancellor required extra security to help get him through the rabble of protestors.

Today’s Agenda, 3/5 1. Warm-up Learning Targets: 2. Grammar – misplaced modifiers 3. Complete the graphic organizer to start your writing process ***Your graphic organizer will be graded as part of the writing process.*** Learning Targets: Identify phrases within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers. Understand how to place modifiers for clarity and meaning when writing. Pre-write argumentative essay using a graphic organizer

Notes - Modifiers, 3/5 (copy blue text in notes) pg. 165 Modifiers – words, phrases or clauses that add information to a sentence Can be used as adjectives (describes a noun) Can be used as adverbs (describes a verb, adverb or adjective) Example: Eva played the game that had been given to her by her mother. The underlined words are a clause that gives us extra information about the game. The modifier is placed right after the noun it is describing. Placing a modifier close to the word it is describing helps make the meaning clear.

Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers, pg. 165 (copy blue text in notes) Example: During the band concert, the flute player was on her phone with the pink hair. In this sentence, it sounds as if the phone has pink hair, so with the pink hair should be moved next to the word it modifies, player. Improved: During the band concert, the flute player with the pink hair was on her phone. Before you can move modifiers to appropriate positions within sentences, you must be able to identify modifiers. A misplaced modifier is a modifier that is not near the word it modifies.

After you have completed your T-chart and formulated your claim, raise your hand for Ms. U to check your work. Then you will start the writing process by completing this graphic organizer.

Important Assignments… Take Membean quiz tonight. Pre-Write graphic organizer is due tomorrow by the end of class for a grade Continue working on Membean for the month of March.
