On the road again

On the road again You have been learning about and applying UDL in your districts for several months. Goal: To discover your team’s cohesive thoughts about UDL implementation Materials: Sticky notes, pen/pencil

On the road again Activity: Four questions related to UDL will be asked on four separate slides. Independently write your answer on stickies using a single word or phrase for each sticky. The time to answer each question will be 30 seconds. After all four questions have been answered, bring all of your team’s stickies together in no specific order. Read through the stickies and group them according to similar themes/ideas. Write a short phrase or sentence that describes each theme/idea.

Warm up Sticky 1 In what ways do you apply UDL as a framework for professional learning?

Warm up Sticky 2 In what ways do you apply UDL as a framework for enhancing lesson design for all students?

Warm up Sticky 3 In what ways do you apply UDL as a systems change framework?

Warm up sticky 4 In what ways do you apply UDL as framework for thinking about your school climate

What are the themes or ideas that stand out?

Breakout Overview for Today: Session 1: UDL Exchange Session 2: UDL Lesson Q&A, Resource Mapping Q&A Session 3: Ideas for UDL PD These are not ‘lectures’ but discussion time Highlight throughout the workshop today: What makes something (a lesson, a PD, resources) UDL? (narrow goals, flexible means to reach the goals, thinking of variability, referencing the Guidelines to guide decisions)

Reflection What do you know now about UDL that you did not know before? For example: I used to think… Now I think… or I did not know that UDL… but now I know… I used to think UDL was about accommodations for students with special needs… Now I think that UDL is about using the UDL Guidelines as a framework for planning my lessons with flexibility and accessibility for all my students. I used to think UDL was just about ‘good’ teaching… Now I think that UDL is a strategy for planning lessons, professional learning, school activities so that all learners (students- adults) can become purposeful, strategic, and resourceful. I did not know that UDL could be done without technology. Now I know that I can think of the resources that are in my classroom (and are generally non-technology) as potential supports for providing representation, action & expression, and engagement towards my goal. I did not know that UDL focused so much on goal-setting. Now I know that with a clear, easy-to-understand goal, it is easier to think of flexible options for representation, action & expression, and engagement.

Next session: PDP, evaluations Work & share (lessons, resource maps) Celebrate, reflect, next steps PDP, evaluations
