Ecology

Save The Mosquitos!!

What Ecology is NOT Pollution Science….. Environmental Activism/Extremism Scare/Political Propaganda

What Ecology IS: The scientific (as in OBJECTIVE and HONEST) study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment (surroundings) Ernest Haeckel coined this in 1866 based on the Greek word “oikos” This word means “house” Oikos is also the root word for the word “economy” Haeckel saw nature operating this way with each component playing its own role, much like in an economy

Ecology… Biosphere: contains the combined portions of the planet in which all life exists. This includes land water and air. Extends 8 km above sea level and around 11 km below sea level. Interactions within components of the biosphere are referred to as the “web of interdependence,” which is extremely vast, to put it lightly. Much diversity in the biosphere. The biosphere is dynamic (constantly changing to one degree to another).

Levels of Organization

Ecological Methods Observing: Experimenting: Modeling: example: mathematical, computer simulation
