Objectives Understand what is meant by health and well being. Write a definition for each. Assess your own health and well being.

How are you today? Ask your partner this question. Think about their answer. What did they consider. Was it a positive or a negative answer?

Good health means different things to different people Good health means different things to different people. This is because there are different ways of looking at health. Health and well being can be described as the absence of physical illness, disease and mental distress. This is a negative definition. It can be described as the achievement and maintenance of physical fitness and mental stability. This is a positive definition. Health and well being are the result of a combination of physical, social, intellectual and emotional factors. This is a holistic definition. Key word: holistic - to look at the whole; to consider the whole person.

The World Health organization gives a very holistic view of health and well being. Their definition is: ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’
