CHANGE Emperor Penguins These may be the world’s largest species of penguin but they are not immune to the effects of climate change. In the past where sea ice has shrunk, the number of Emperor Penguins has dropped. Scientists think that these penguins may be especially sensitive to shifting ocean temperatures caused by climate change. Loss of sea-ice means the loss of large areas of Emperor Penguin breeding sites and increased vulnerability of chicks to predators. CHANGE

A new polar research ship for Britain Construction has begun on the RRS Sir David Attenborough – one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world. From 2019 scientists researching oceans, ice and atmosphere will have access to state-of-the-art facilities on this floating laboratory. The new polar ship is commissioned by NERC, built by Cammell Laird and operated by British Antarctic Survey. This new research platform will transform how ship-borne science is conducted in the Polar Regions. The commissioning of the RRS Sir David Attenborough is part of a major Government polar infrastructure investment programme designed to keep Britain at the forefront of world-leading research in Antarctica and the Arctic.

The Boaty sub-sea vehicle will be dispatched from RRS Sir David Attenborough to allow the ship's research crew to collect data and samples from the deepest waters of the Arctic and Antarctic

Adapting To Change – UK policy towards the Arctic’ The UK is not an Arctic State, but it is the Arctic’s nearest neighbour. In this Policy Framework the FCO has outlined what expertise the UK can offer to help meet some of the long-term challenges facing the region and to ensure a sustainable future. The UK will continue to support and respect the sovereign rights of the Arctic States; the people who live and work in the Arctic; and the unique and fragile natural environment.
