Key Study Focus: Sue Sharpe According to Sharpe, there has been a growth in the number of financial independent women in their twenties and thirties who are pursuing careers rather than settling down in long-term relationships and having children. She found that many recognised their future life would be one of combining the double shift of paid work and domestic responsibilities. She showed that young women today are more confident, assertive and ambitious compared with 20 years ago, striving for gender equality and fulfilment in employment. Research into the meanings and motivations that girls bring to education shows that girls appear to be more committed, work harder and have clearer long-term ambitions than boys.
