Explanations for the Gender Gap in Educational Achievement Why do think girls out perform boys? THINK/PAIR/SHARE. Complete Part One of Worksheet

Key Study Focus: Sue Sharpe Prioritise these ambitions Love Marriage Career Money Babies Partner Job Research Method Interviews with girls. Same interviews used in 1970 and 1990 (Longitudinal Study)

Key Study Focus: Sue Sharpe According to Sharpe, there has been a growth in the number of financial independent women in their twenties and thirties who are pursuing careers rather than settling down in long-term relationships and having children. She found that many recognised their future life would be one of combining the double shift of paid work and domestic responsibilities. She showed that young women today are more confident, assertive and ambitious compared with 20 years ago, striving for gender equality and fulfilment in employment. Research into the meanings and motivations that girls bring to education shows that girls appear to be more committed, work harder and have clearer long-term ambitions than boys. A01 – Knowledge & Understanding A02 – Interpretation & Application

Other ‘External’ Explanations A01 – Make notes on studies / examples / laws which might help explain ‘the gender gap.’ 2 sentences per section. Page 52 How might feminism have helped improve girls’ educational achievement? How might changes in the family effect girls’ attitude to education? How might changes in employment affect how girls do at school? How might changes in girls’ ambitions affect how they do at school? A02 – Describe how each of these factors has a positive effect on girls achievement. 1 sentence.

(A03) Which external factor has the least influence on female achievement and why? (A03) How can we link what we have learnt to the topics of Education Policies, Theories of Education, or Class Differences in achievement? (A03) Thinking about next lesson, what could be some internal factors ? (A03) GREAT LEARNING...B Be able to identify and describe more than one possible reason for the gender gap in education, including a clear description of a relevant study or a sociological concept which supports your points.
