Presentation transcript:

Making It Relevant: Creating Engaging IL Experiences for Students Collaboration Instruction Supported by a grant from Gettysburg College’s Johnson Center for Creative Teaching and Learning, two librarians and a professor redesigned a 300-level Health Sciences course. The main goal was to integrate information literacy (IL) throughout the assignments. Through the process of drafting grant proposals, students were required to identify and use a variety of information sources, including statistics, journal articles and intervention studies. The final product resulted in the students participating in a mock National Institutes of Health (NIH) peer review panel. Word cloud of intervention keywords. Meet with faculty EARLY Help refine/shape assignments Librarian office hours Faculty participate in IL sessions Librarians participate in Peer Review panel Coordinated assessment In-class source evaluation activity Break into sizable chunks Design “just in time” assignment-driven IL sessions Build upon previous session(s) & knowledge Include engaging activities (see handout) Assignments Using Post-its to create a student-driven word cloud Kayla Lenkner & Meggan Smith
