Development and Population Growth

Causes for rapid population growth in LICs High birth rate Low death rate Population ‘explosion’ UK 1800s India 1950-2000 Globally by 2015 earth will have 9 billion Niger / Chad / Africa – 7 children per woman

Impact of rapid population growth on development Leads to overpopulation: “too many people for the land or resources” Overpopulation leads to…….

Population growth Famine Physical causes eg drought Civil war Lack of government assistance Pop growth can be a good thing as it provides human resources for industries.

Factors influencing development Historical Economic Physical

Historic Factors Colonialism – Britain France and Spain

Historic factors (cont) Build global influence Access raw materials Access new labour (slave trade) India (1947) Nigeria (1960) independence Power struggles Conflict Borders 5 million deaths in Congo since 1990

Economic Factors From taking resources to buying resources Rich TNCs (trans-national companies) buy materials and food from LICs at low prices which prevent further development Walmart, China Petrol, Shel, Esso, Texaco, Nike, Apple. Why do prices stay low? WTO not insisted on fair trade terms Corrupt leaders of LICs Overproduction of crops keeps prices low.

Physical Factors Coastlines; lack of coast = lack of development. 45 countries are landlocked. Eg no coastline. Can’t trade without ports Natural Hazards; volcanoes, earthquakes, (Haiti) Climate; not as clear, but still a factor for some. Central Africa TRF Congo vs Brazil? Desert in Chad vs Saudi Arabia

Landlocked….. LICs
