Trends of the past 30 years… Cold War ended USA became most dominant world power some nations on the rise?... Many nations struggle with democracy & human rights Globalization intensifies Environmental crises grow Impacts of global terrorism (ex. al-Qaeda)

COLD WAR ENDS: 1980s-1991 USSR forced into bankruptcy by USA nuclear weapons, space race, want American products Mikhail Gorbachev: Soviet leader introduced 2 major reforms for USSR Glasnost = freedom of press Perestroika = capitalist reforms Independence movements in Eastern Europe (ended USSR’s empire) Gorbachev dissolved the Soviet Union, Dec 31st, 1991 USSR  Russia (again) adopts capitalism weak democracy

Africa & Asia in the Modern World Most African & Asian nations have… …weak democracies corruption, rigged elections, dictatorships, military controls government ex. Pakistan, Nigeria, Congo …& poor economies, ex. Mali, Kenya, Sudan, Somalia

…while others have a combination of the two. powerful economies, but no democracy: ex. China adopted capitalism, but does not protect human rights Communist party still dominates ex. Tiananmen Square Massacre, 1989 In spring of 1989, student protestors from across China gathered in Beijing at Tiananmen Square (considered the heart of China) to carry out civil disobedience in support of democratic reforms. China’s communist government responded by attacking with troops and tanks, resulting in the deaths of thousands of unarmed protestors. China maintains strict control over its people, severely restricting basic rights.
