Understanding and Teaching Primary Mathematics Chapter 1 Teaching and Learning Primary Mathematics

Key topics The chapter describes what is meant by the following three forms of subject knowledge: Mathematical subject matter knowledge Curriculum subject knowledge Pedagogical subject knowledge

Starting Point X 8 2 1/2 5 1/4 10 4 6 3 7 9 12

Why is subject knowledge important? Think of your best ever teacher of mathematics. List three qualities that they had. How do you think these qualities related to their mathematical subject knowledge? Discuss this with a partner.

Three forms of subject knowledge I have good mathematical subject matter knowledge (I understand the mathematics that I have to teach) I have good curriculum subject knowledge (I know the requirements of the curriculum) I have good pedagogical subject knowledge (I can make good choices of activities to support pupils in learning mathematics)

Misconceptions Find examples which show these statements are misconceptions: Multiplication always makes numbers bigger Division always makes numbers smaller The more digits a number has the larger its value All rectangles with perimeter 12cm will have the same area

A framework for teaching mathematics Problem solving using mathematics Number: counting; place value; fractions, decimals and percentages Number: knowing and using number facts Number: calculations Algebra Geometry Measurement Statistics

Foundations for learning mathematics Counting reliably with numbers 1 to 20 Placing numbers in order and saying which number is 1 more or less than a given number Using practical materials to add and subtract two single-digit numbers by counting on or back to find the answer Using practical materials to solve problems including doubling, halving and sharing Using everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money Comparing quantities and objects by their properties Recognising, creating and describing patterns Exploring characteristics of everyday objects and shapes using mathematical language to describe them
