Having a variety of cultures and languages in America benefits everyone.
American Immigration policy is the biggest issue in politics right now. (when we discuss this, do not express your personal opinion on what’s wrong with immigration policy, just stick to the prompt.)
The US has a responsibility to take in refugees.
Migrations are Nothing New
The peopling of the Americas is still hotly debated While there is lots of evidence for multiple migrations over the Bering Land Bridge, they may not have been the first to populate the Americas. Warmer colors on the map represent stronger DNA affinities.

Migration Migration is a permanent move to a new location Emigration – number of people leaving a geographic area Immigration – is the number of people entering a geographic area Net migration is the difference between the number of people entering a geographic area (immigrants) and those leaving (emigrants)
Key Issues: Migration Why do people migrate? What obstacles do migrants face? Why do people migrate within a country?
Push and Pull factors Think to yourself why people would want to migrate to a different place These are called PULL factors – they are attractive factors that the place offers Now think about the location in which you live now… what about this place do you want to leave behind? These are called PUSH factors – reasons why you want to move to a new location
Push Factors Pull Factors Poor economy – no jobs Crime Racism Environmental Factors No space Political instability Health issues Forced migration (refugees) Thriving or growing economy Nice homes, spaces to live Acceptance and tolerance Healthier Weather/ climate/ environment
Refugee - United Nations Convention 1977 A refugee is a person who… owing well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion, is outside of the country of his nationality and is unable, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself to the protection of that country. - United Nations Convention 1977

Back to Global Migration Patterns What do you notice about these patterns? People are moving from _______countries to _______ countries.
Where Are Migrants Distributed? Regions with Net Out - Migration: Asia, Africa, and Latin America Regions with Net In - Migration: North America, Europe, and Oceania The U.S. has the largest foreign-born population at 46,627,102. That’s just over 14% of our total population.
Migration to U.S., by region of origin Most migrants to the U.S. were from Europe until the 1960s. Since then, Latin America and Asia have become the main sources.
Pros and Cons of Immigration In what ways is immigration a good thing for a country/region? In what ways is immigration a negative thing for a country/region? BBC table
Other Cons Some are concerned that illegal immigrants will cause a strain on the American taxpayer due to a lack of insurance and the number of illegal immigrants in American prisons. (1.6 percent of immigrant males age 18-39 are incarcerated, compared to 3.3 percent of the native-born) Some believe immigrants lead to an increase in crime.
Another Consequence: Brain Drain Countries give preference to skilled workers, U.S. immigration policy contributes to a brain drain, which is a large – scale emigration by talented people. Nearly one-fourth of all legal immigrants to the United States have attended graduate school, compared to less than one-tenth of native – born Americans. What affect does that have on other countries?

Build a Wall What would that look like? The country is divided on whether or not this is necessary. Reviewing Mexican census data, Pew reported that most Mexicans left the United States “of their own accord,” with about six in 10 migrants who returned home saying they were reuniting with family members. About 6 percent said they had found jobs there. Another 14 percent said they had been deported
Immigration will continue to be a polarizing issue in America and abroad. In current U.S. politics (politifacts)
Anti-Immigrant Sentiment is Nothing New in America In groups (assigned by me), you will be interpreting several political cartoons. Each student must turn in their own answer sheet. We’ll do the first one together.
The sign to the left of Uncle Sam reads: "Free education, free land, free speech, free ballot, free lunch." The sign near the center of the image reads: "No oppressive taxes, no expensive kings, no compulsory military service, no knouts or dungeons."
