Annual Professional Development Conference - 2016 Tuesday 23 August Resources for practitioners – what’s available and where? Sharon McDowall

Resources – what’s available and where? Where do you start? Unit specification Course Tutor Guide Student Learning Guide Is this enough? Why not?? As you begin to plan what you are going to teach for the next academic session – what do you think about? Where do you start? First thing – Unit specification. Lot of suggestions, hints and tips in the Support Notes – content and context, approaches to delivery and assessment. Course Tutor Guide – set the Unit in context of the HND programme. Identifies any topic overlap or relevance with other Units Student Learning Guide – produced for majority of Units in the HND frameworks, should reflect the Unit content and Evidence requirements. So – do you think that is enough? Why not?

Resources – what’s available and where? What is an HND programme? Vocational programme which includes a wide range of practical approaches to learning: Project and assignment work Team and group work Research into real business practice To answer ‘why not’ – go back to thinking about purpose of an HND programme What is it, what is its purpose? It’s a vocational programme which should incorporate a mix of practical approaches to learning such as projects and assignments, team or group work, research and investigation into real life business practices – to support the theories learned. So, to achieve this you need to think about a whole range of teaching approaches and resources that you can use to support this. Requires various teaching approaches and a wide range of resources and techniques

Resources – what’s available and where? Another way to think about this is – how do you want your students to learn? Do you want them to be passive learners or active learners? There will always be a need for some passive learning – to get certain points across. But too much passive learning can result in this. You should be striving for this – student active learning where they are engaged in their own learning through activities such as open discussion, quizzes, group exercises, presentations etc.

Resources – what’s available and where? SQA website Support for You - Signposting of additional resources SQA Events

Resources – what’s available and where? Ushare

Resources – what’s available and where? Your own learning experience Business experience What else do you need to do? Draw from as many sources as you possibly can – internet, newspapers, TV, books, your own learning experiences – think back to your own experiences in university and also, any business experience you may have – including part time work whilst studying.

Any questions? Quick overview of resources – both those available from SQA and also those you need to think about yourself. Resources are the the theme for the rest of today
