2. What country does this song sound like its written about? 1. Who’s the Artist? 2. What country does this song sound like its written about? 3. What geological hazard is being sung about? EXTENSION  What the heck has this to do with the geology topic you are studying ?

The song is about the 'Silent Twins', June and Jennifer Gibbons, two black girls who lived in Haverfordwest in Wales. The "disco dancing with the rapists" line refers to a 'novel' written by Jennifer called 'The Pugilist', in which a local disco incites the patrons to insane violence. They commited several acts of arson, which led to their imprisonment. As someone mentioned earlier, when Jennifer died, June began to live a normal life, which she still does.

TSUNAMI (‘Soo Nah Mee’) Key Question: Why are tsunami hazardous and how can they be managed? Key Words: Amplitude Wavelength Fault displacement Think? What type of hazard is this?

$ 34.6 Billion in damage

After Before

Take at a look at these before and after slides from the 2011 Japan Tsunami, Make Notes as you go…..

Japan 11 March, 14:46 2011:

Underwater Mega thrust earthquake 9.0 magnitude

Triggers Ocean Floor Disturbance

Epicentre 70Km from coast

Focus 30km deep

Most powerful Tsunami to hit Japan, 4th Largest of all time

Focus 30km deep

40 Metre high waves Travelled 10km in land Shifted earth on its axis by 10cm

15, 887 dead 6, 150 injured 2, 543 missing

130, 000 collapsed buildings

Even caused partial nuclear meltdown at Fukushima nuclear plant

$ 34.6 Billion in damage

Where globally are most at risk Colour code your map Describe the pattern EXTENSION: suggest why this pattern occurs

How was the boxing day tsunami generated ? Explain in your own words mega thrusting occurs triggering tsunami

Why are tsunamis so damaging to coastal areas? Explain in your own words how tsunami form

How can tsunamis be managed? Buildings!

Building Design

Prediction and warning Is based on seismology and deep sea buoys which measure wave height using GPS. Warnings can then be issued if an alert system is in place.
