Welcome Getting Around Lightly A27 and your area Polegate, Saturday 8 November 2014 Georgia Wrighton Director CPRE Sussex #A27 @CPRESussex

“Getting around is vital, but it is in all our interests to protect the character and tranquillity of cherished Sussex countryside.”

5 Getting Around Lightly “Roads are a vital artery in Sussex life, but in recent times plans for major new roads have posed grave threats to areas of wonderful countryside which once under tarmac are gone forever. We cannot provide for unlimited traffic demands without severely damaging the countryside. Air and noise pollution diminish quality of life and emissions contribute to a more chaotic climate. We want to see better local rail links, along the coast and linking towns - and to London from coastal towns in need of regeneration. Faster and direct links are vital.” Key commitment Positive investment in sustainable transport is the responsible way to better connect Sussex, avoiding unnecessarily damaging airport and road expansion. CPRE Sussex’s objects: We exist to promote and encourage for the benefit of the public the improvement, protection and preservation of Sussex’s countryside and its towns and villages, and their environmentally sustainable development. CPRE Sussex is part of a national co-ordinated network of charities, all with the same aims. We are the only charity working nationwide with the aim of protecting our unique rural heritage and landscape so that it is as available to future generations as it is to us today – which is what sustainable means. Sustainability is being realistic: we are not purists seeking to wrap the rural parts of Sussex in cotton wool. Anecdote re pilot with a failed engine refused permission to dump fuel over Windsor Castle: Ask the lady whether she would prefer the fuel or the plane. ____________________________________________ Priorities: How many of you consider the protection of Sussex’s countryside to be a really important to fight for?

The right infrastructure for the right reasons CPRE Manifesto The right infrastructure for the right reasons We need to make better use of existing transport and energy infrastructure and smarter decisions on new investment — to reduce demand rather than drive it. Energy bills and public transport fares are continuing to rise, yet power cuts and disrupted journeys are ever more likely. It’s not surprising there is pressure for renewed investment in energy and transport networks. But building the wrong sort of infrastructure not only risks devastating our landscapes, but also locks us into unsustainable and increasingly expensive lifestyles. CPRE Manifesto Reducing demand for energy and motorised travel is crucial, but has been neglected. New technologies and lifestyle changes offer ‘smarter’ opportunities, such as better insulated homes and car sharing. But reducing carbon emissions and other pollutants requires significantly more renewable energy and sustainable travel options. The next Government should:  Reduce the demand for car travel and energy, by ensuring places are better suited to walking and cycling, and by retrofitting old buildings and seeking the highest environmental standards in new ones;  Prioritise better and smarter transport choices, including supporting community-led transport, integrated and expanded public transport networks and local freight distribution hubs, over road expansion; CPRE Sussex’s objects: We exist to promote and encourage for the benefit of the public the improvement, protection and preservation of Sussex’s countryside and its towns and villages, and their environmentally sustainable development.
