Nutrient Cycles Carbon – Importance – Component of all organic compounds, in animal skeletons & rocks, as CO2 in atmosphere and oceans, fossil fuels

Nitrogen – Importance – Needed to make amino acids, in atmosphere, in soil, decaying organic matter, in oceans

Phosphorus – Importance – Part of DNA & RNA, mostly on land in rocks & minerals, in oceans

Nutrient Limitation Primary productivity – rate at which primary producers create organic material Limiting nutrient – nutrient not available for photosynthesis, so it can’t occur
