Presentation transcript:

Other states are investing. Percentage Change in State Higher Education Appropriations FY2006 – FY2015 Adjusted for Inflation -11.1% Last year there were only 8 other states had a reduction in state support for Higher Education. Wisconsin had the second highest reduction. On average, there was a 4.1% increase while Wisconsin decreased by 8.1%.   Most states have been increasing there funding for a number of years now. There wasn’t data available for Illinois but all of our neighboring states have since increased their investment in higher education

We are losing ground. Top 10 and top 25 are an average that does not include Johns Hopkins

Declining investment in UW-Madison UW-Madison has fallen from out of the top 5 of US research institutions for the first time since 1972. 2014 Johns Hopkins U. of Michigan U. of Washington, Seattle UW-Madison U. of California, San Francisco 2015 Johns Hopkins U. of Michigan U. of Washington, Seattle U. of California, San Francisco U. of California, San Diego UW-Madison

The change that brought UW-Madison out of the top 5 Top 5 Research Universities based on 2014 Ranking: Analysis of Source of Funds 2014 to 2015 UW-Madison is the only institution of the top 5 in 2014 that dropped in research expenditures overall.

Longer view – 5 years Top 5 Research Universities based on 2014 Ranking: Analysis of Source of Funds 2011-2015 UW-Madison is the only institution in the top 5 in 2011 that dropped in research expenditures by 2015. UW-Madison dropped the most among state/local government-funded expenditures and business-funded expenditures.

This graph shows how UW-Madison changed in rankings for federal research expenditures – from #5 in 2005 to #12 in 2014 (currently UW-Madison is ranked 14th).

This graph shows the following: The number of UW-Madison faculty has not changed in the past 10 years. UW-Madison’s distribution of Assistant, Associate, and Professors has not changed. Our research expenditures (blue line) are not changing during this time.

Moving forward We cannot change: We can work toward: Federal funding levels State budget cuts over the past 10 years Reputational damage already inflicted on UW-Madison Increasing our faculty size Supporting collaborative, multi-investigator, multidisciplinary large research grants Reducing compliance burden Prioritizing laboratory remodeling requests Developing a “concierge” service approach for research How can we support research computing to enhance our research portfolio?
