Presentation transcript:

Paul Ralph Ehrlich ~ By: Blake Borwig ~ •Born May 29, 1932 (age 83)‏ •Lives in the United States (native country)‏ •Paul R. Ehrlich Ehrlich graduated in zoology from the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., 1953) and received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas (1957). •He works in the department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University and is the president of Stanford's Center for Conservation Biology.

Contributions: •He has been a pioneer in alerting the public to the problems of overpopulation, and in raising issues of population, resources, and the environment. •Became well known for his controversial 1968 book, The Population Bomb. •Encouraged countries to take action to avoid disaster caused by the consequences of population growth and limited resources.

How does this relate to APES? •Although Ehrlich was not the first to raise the alarm about population issues – concern had been widespread in the 1950s and 1960s – his charismatic and media-savvy approach brought the issue to a new level of media prominence. •As of 2013, Ehrlich continues to perform policy research concerning population and resource issues, with an emphasis upon endangered species, cultural evolution, environmental ethics, and the preservation of genetic resources. All of these topics are central to the curriculum of APES.
