Population Distribution and Push/Pull Factors SOL WG. 5

Population distribution Population distribution- How a population is spread out over an area of land.

Factors that influence population distribution Climate- weather patterns over a series of years Economic development- improving the economic well-being for a community by creating jobs and growing incomes. Government Policy-Law’s and a plan or course of action taken by government.

Factors that influence population distribution Rural/Urban settlement patterns- Rural settlements often lack transportation and technology that is possessed by urban settlements. Capital Resources- Man made resources like technology & Transportation. Conflicts- Conflicts in a region often cause people to leave an area of conflict (warzone) and settle in a more peaceful place where they are known as a refugee.

Push and Pull factors A push factor is a reason for someone to leave a region. Ex- A dictator is killing everyone below 6 ft. tall. Pull factor- A reason for someone wanting to go to another region. Ex- I can make more money in America than I can in the Sahara Desert.

Push Factors Overpopulation Religious persecution Lack of job opportunities Agricultural decline Conflict Political persecution Natural hazards (e.g., droughts, floods, famines, volcanic eruptions) Limits on personal freedom Environmental degradation

Pull Factors Religion Economic opportunity- opportunity to make more money. Land availability Political freedom Ethnic and family ties Arable land

Assignment: Follow all instructions for full credit Find a partner so that you have ONE person to work with. Create a real life example for each of the push/pull factors listed on slides 6 & 7. Write your examples in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Turn in one sheet of paper with BOTH names on it when you are completed. Raise your hands if you have any questions.
