What do you know about…. Modernism? The 1920s? The Harlem Renaissance?

American Modernism Life in the 20th century – progress, industrialization, quicker pace of life Still a focus on individualism and happiness, BUT… DISILLUSIONMENT People feel isolated, alienated, separated from any type of “whole” America has lost its sense of unity Is the American Dream achievable? Is any dream achievable? Can you truly be happy? Can you make yourself what you want to be? Hope continues in spite of these doubts. New beginnings are possible. You can make yourself happy. All human beings share the experiences of life.

Pick an object/thing. Write it down. Ms. Yeganegi’s example:

What would _______ say about _______? 1) Romantic: I am inspired by this beautiful cat. I believe that this cat is a pure and sweet animal who can make my life happier. 2) Transcendentalist: This cat is one of God’s creatures. I can learn everything I need in life by watching this cat. 3) Dark Romantic: This cat may be an innocent feline, but deep inside it is an evil creature. 4) Modernist: My world is a dark place but this cat might be a bright spot in my otherwise sad life.

Think! How is modernism similar to the other literary periods we have looked at in this unit? What major ideas and themes do they share? How is it different? What are the most significant changes?
