Dimensional Analysis The goal of dimensional analysis is to simplify a problem by focusing on the units of measurement (dimensions). Dimensional analysis is very useful when converting between units (like converting inches to yards, or converting between the English and SI systems of measurement). 9/22/2014

Example: You work at the amusement park for 6 hrs a day and you are paid $12 per hour. How much do you make per day? $12 1 ℎ𝑟 × 6 ℎ𝑟𝑠 ? $ = $ 72.00 9/22/2014

Example: Metric to metric 220 centimeters to some number of meters 220 𝑐𝑚 ? × 1 𝑚 100 𝑐𝑚 = 220 𝑚 100 =2.20 𝑚 9/22/2014

Conversion Factor: 1 in = 2.54 cm Example: 7 in = ________ cm 7 𝑖𝑛 ? × 2.54 𝑐𝑚 1 𝑖𝑛 = 7 ×2.54 𝑐𝑚=17.78 𝑐𝑚 9/22/2014

English & Metric Conversions To go from To Multiply by mi Km 1.61 ft m 0.305 in cm 2.54 lb Kg 0.454 0.62 3.28 0.394 2.204

English & Metric Conversions Use the chart and a calculator to convert each measurement. Be sure to show your work using GUESS Method. Round answers to the nearest hundredth if needed. Example: 16 in = ____ cm G 16 in U ____ cm E 1 in = 2.54 cm S 16 𝑖𝑛 ? 𝑐𝑚 = 1 𝑖𝑛 2.54 𝑐𝑚 Cross multiple, then divide S 40.64 cm Select the conversion factor

Complete the following in your Science Notebook 345 lbs = ______ Kg 450 Km = _____ mi 40 m = _____ ft 50 Kg = _____ lbs 56 cm = _____ in 1200 mi _____ Km 4 ft = _____ m 12 in = _____ cm

Penny has a pencil that is 19 cm long. How long is the pencil in inches? Macho Mel can lift 200 kilograms with ease. How much is this in pounds? The distance between Happyville and Giggleland is 60 miles. How far is this in kilometers? A cookie recipe calls for 1 pound of butter. How many kilograms of butter would be needed for 3 batches of cookies?
