What is the Reformation? Think, Pair, Share Activity Who Where What Why

What is the Reformation? Revolution in Christianity that created a division in the Catholic Church known as Protestantism. Martin Luther is credited with starting this movement This movement spread across Northern Europe like a wildfire.

Why did it happen: Renaissance Increase in wealth and trade brings Renaissance. Renaissance- rebirth of classical Greek-Roman culture in Europe. The Renaissance also brought on a new type of philosophy Humanism. Humanism- individual achievements and better oneself with logic and reason. Humanism eventually spread into the realm of Christianity known as Christian Humanism….WHY?

BAD Church Practices

Good Works Can Save You! 1. Selling of Indulgences- literally buying a get out of purgatory free card for you or your dead loved ones. 2. Relics- merchants with licenses (approved by church) sold fake relics to people promising that it meant forgiveness, good fortune, and salvation. 3. Pilgrimages- a trip to a holy place like Jerusalem was also a way to attain salvation. LIKE A GOOD BUSINESS- all three are playing on the desire of the people to achieve salvation.

Critics of the Church Desiderus Erasmus- -Clergy should show people how to live good Christian life NOT provide actions and beliefs that MAY lead to salvation. In other words “Salvation can’t be achieved through external forces but only by internal forces” Laid a foundation for Martin Luther to build on
