What is the Reformation? Revolution in Christianity that created a division in the Catholic Church known as Protestantism. Martin Luther is credited with starting this movement This movement spread across Northern Europe like a wildfire.
Why did it happen: Renaissance Increase in wealth and trade brings Renaissance. Renaissance- rebirth of classical Greek-Roman culture in Europe. The Renaissance also brought on a new type of philosophy Humanism. Humanism- individual achievements and better oneself with logic and reason. Humanism eventually spread into the realm of Christianity known as Christian Humanism….WHY?

Good Works Can Save You! 1. Selling of Indulgences- literally buying a get out of purgatory free card for you or your dead loved ones. 2. Relics- merchants with licenses (approved by church) sold fake relics to people promising that it meant forgiveness, good fortune, and salvation. 3. Pilgrimages- a trip to a holy place like Jerusalem was also a way to attain salvation. LIKE A GOOD BUSINESS- all three are playing on the desire of the people to achieve salvation.
