Academic Vocabulary Romeo and Juliet Unit

Mutiny Noun: a rebellion against any authority Example: The crew staged a mutiny against their captain and took control of the ship.

Grievance Noun: something that is believed to cause distress; a wrong causing complaint The woman filed a grievance against her noisy neighbor.

Accustomed Adj: customary; usual; by habit In their accustomed manner, the couple had pancakes for breakfast.

Virtuous Adj: morally excellent; having good values; conforming to ethical principles Lead a virtuous life and you will be rewarded.

Chide Verb: to punish or scold; to harass or nag The mother chided her son for coming home late.

Alliance Noun: a merging or coming together of efforts, interests, families, organizations etc. An alliance between countries must be mutually beneficial.

Rancor Noun: bitter resentment or ill will; hatred Elise had a lot of rancor towards Tom for leaving her at the altar.

Pensive Adj: reflective; thoughtful The cold, snowy weather put Jenna in a very pensive mood.

Lamentable Adj: regrettable; unfortunate Katie made a lamentable decision when she lied to her best friend.

Famine Noun: extreme hunger; starvation No rain for two months caused famine in parts of Africa.
