Leadership

My Journey Into Leadership Pamela Westbrooks Upward Sports – Established in 1995, Upward is the world’s largest Christian youth sports provider. This year, approximately 400,000 athletes in 47 states will participate in an Upward program. Mission – Promoting the Discovery of Jesus Through Sports

The Foundation of Leadership Who you Are – Integrity A person has integrity when there is no gap between intent and behavior. Someone with integrity walks in harmony with their deepest values and beliefs: they “walk their talk” according to Stephen Covey’s The Speed of Trust. They are not driven by others opinions or the expediency of the moment. A person with integrity has the courage to make wise decisions even when it is hard. What you Know – Competent Competent people deliver results. Stephen Covey states in The Speed of Trust “People don’t trust people who don’t deliver results. If the results aren’t there, neither is the credibility.” Competent people increase their knowledge. They have a teachable spirit. They care enough about their team to develop their people. Effective Leaders Must be Trustworthy

Lessons Learned Decisions You Make Now Will Define the Future When your values are clear to you, making decisions become easier. When possible make a decision now, even if the action is in the future. A reviewed decision is usually is better than one reached at the last moment, or in the moment.

Lessons Learned Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn Win gracefully, humbly. There will likely be a time you (or your company) will not be winning in the future. When you are losing (or your company is losing) it will be even more important to increase communication and transparency to maintain trust. Your ability to handle failure is critical. Do you allow your mistakes to hurt you or make you more valuable to the organization?

Lessons Learned Humility and Courage Go Hand-in-Hand Embrace uncertainty . Leaders must admit when they don’t have all the answers, create space for others to step forward and ask questions and offer solutions. Engage in dialogue, not debate. Truly engage with different points of view. Learn from new perspectives. Admit Mistakes. Quickly take ownership. An humble person is more concerned about what is right than being right.

Lessons Learned Decisions You Make Now Will Define the Future Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn Humility and Courage Go Hand-in-Hand The Best Question Ever In light of my past experiences, my current circumstances and future hopes and dreams – what is the wise thing to do? The Best Question Ever – Andy Stanley
