STAND WITH REFUGEES (7-14 years) The following images are for use with the Exploring images activity ideas. Use the images in slides 2 to 6 with learners aged 7-11 years, and the images in slides 6 to 12 with learners aged 11-14 years. Slide 6 is suitable for use with both age groups and helps learners to appreciate that people are displaced everywhere in the world. Although richer countries are better able to support people when crises strike (and more people have insurance for their homes and possessions), the pain of being forced to leave your home is still there. Note: The activity ideas in this resource are intended to support your teaching rather than guide it. Therefore, no detailed background information has been provided, and additional teaching may be required to develop learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding of some key concepts. There are suggested web links and further teaching resources provided in the Teaching ideas section.

Image info: In March 2015, Cyclone Pam ravaged the island nation of Vanuatu, destroying and damaging homes. Thousands of people lost their homes and were left with no shelter and no access to clean water or food. Photo credit: Vlad Sokhin/Panos/OxfamAUS

Image info: Families walk along the shoreline in Teknaf, Bangladesh Image info: Families walk along the shoreline in Teknaf, Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh, resulting in a massive humanitarian crisis. They are living in terrible conditions, and many are without shelter or clean water. Oxfam, along with others, is responding, providing clean water and other essential supplies. Image info: Every day, the shores of the small Greek island of Lesbos see the arrival of boats coming from Turkey carrying refugees or migrants, who are fleeing war or poverty. After paying traffickers sums of around €1,000 per person (€800 for the over-60s or in bad weather), they risk their lives on a dangerous journey with no guarantees. With life jackets of dubious quality, they set sail with no idea about steering, often at night and in adverse weather conditions. Some are fortunate enough to land on beaches where groups of volunteers from across Europe are waiting for them, while others arrive at empty, inhospitable cliffs. Photo credit: Pablo Tosco/Oxfam

DISASTER Image info: A devastating hurricane hit New Orleans in the USA in 2005. Hundreds of people died with more than a million people displaced in the Gulf region.1 In this image, survivors arrive at New Orleans Airport before being flown to shelters in other US states. CONFLICT Image info: Children watch military vehicles pass by in the village of Imam Gharbi, some 70km south of Mosul, in Iraq. Millions of people in Iraq have been displaced by conflict, and many of these are in need of humanitarian assistance. Photo credit: Sam Tarling/Oxfam

CONFLICT/DISASTER Image info: A father carries his son across a broken bamboo bridge on the edge of Balhukali camp, Bangladesh. Three days of heavy rains flooded many of the areas where people had set up temporary shelters, forcing them to move to higher ground. CONFLICT Image info: Bullet holes mark the wall of a destroyed boarding house in Banki, Nigeria. Ongoing conflict across West Africa’s Lake Chad Basin region has forced millions of people to flee terrifying violence in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad. Photo credit: Sam Tarling/Oxfam
