Power 1830s: switch from water power to coal.

Coal In 1825, Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal fields produced 390,000 tons. In 1849, 3,800,000 tons. Anthracite coal is almost pure carbon. It is hard to light but burns hot with almost no vapor.

Results 1840: Hot blast furnace reduces consumption of fuel in iron production. 1850s: Bessemer process makes possible mass production of steel from pig iron.
