Figure 1 Noninvasive multispectral optoacoustic tomography for the evaluation of activity in Crohn’s disease (CD). Representative images from multispectral optoacoustic tomography measurements of the intestinal wall of a patient with CD in remission (upper panel) and a patient with active CD (lower panel). B-mode ultrasound images have been used for the identification of the intestinal wall. Among other parameters, oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) and oxygen saturation (SO2) images have been calculated from multispectral optoacoustic tomography data. In contrast with the patient in remission, clinical and endoscopic CD activity was associated with increased signals for HbO2 and SO2 in the intestinal wall.
