Respiratory System A series of organs which take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide (primary function) Primary organ is the lungs that carries out the exchange of gases as we breath

Nasal and Oral Cavities The respiratory system begins here at the nose and mouth The air is moistened, warmed, and filtered as it enters the body Nasal Cavity Oral Cavity

Pharynx (Throat) The passage that leads from the nose and mouth to the larynx Same tube as food passed through, so the epiglottis (flap that acts as a switch) plays a role again to stop food going down your wind pipe

Larynx Hollow muscular organ which holds the vocal cords (voice box) which produces sound

Trachea and Bronchus Trachea- a hollow tube (wind pipe) that connects larynx to the right and left bronchus Bronchus (bronchi)- the two major air passageways leading from the trachea to the lungs

Bronchioles and Alveoli Bronchioles- the smallest air passageways coming off of the bronchi Alveoli- air sacks at the end of bronchioles where gas exchange takes place (oxygen in and carbon dioxide out)

Diaphragm A sheet of skeletal muscle that extends across the bottom of the heart and lungs Pulls and pushes against the lungs as we inhale and exhale Aids the lungs in expanding and contracting
