Jeopardy! Digestive System

Rules for teams: Poor sportsmanship will result in loss of points. (shouting out answers, getting upset at other students, etc.) The class will be divided into 3 teams. Each team will have one person designated to buzz in for the team. If the “buzzing” person grabs before the question is read orally, the other team gets to answer instead.

Rules for answering questions: The first team to buzz in will answer the question. After buzzing in, a team is allowed 5 seconds to respond before losing points and allowing the next team to answer. If a team fails to answer a question correctly, they will lose the points the other team may steal the question. The last team to correctly answer a question will select the next category and question.

The place where digestion begins.

What is the mouth?

This connects the mouth and the stomach.

What is the esophagus?

Absorbs water from undigested material, forms and stores feces.

What is the large intestine?

Covered with nutrient-absorbing cells and surrounded by capillaries.

What are villi?

These muscle contractions move food down the esophagus.

What is Peristalsis?

These three organs contribute enzymes and chemicals to the small intestine.

What are the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder?

Bile is produced here.

What is the liver?

Bile is stored here.

What is the gallbladder?

Detoxifies toxic substances in the blood.

What is the liver?

Secretes a bicarbonate to neutralize the HCl before entering the small intestine.

What is the pancreas?

The teeth are the first step in this type of digestion.

What is mechanical digestion?

Chemical digestion in the mouth results from enzymes in this liquid.

What is saliva?

This strong acid works with enzymes in the stomach to digest food.

What is Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)?

Most of the chemical digestion takes place here.

What is the small intestine?

This green colored liquid aids in the digestion of fat.

What is bile?

After a few hours of mechanical and chemical digestion in the stomach, the food becomes this soupy mixture.

What is chyme?

The process of breaking down food into nutrients that the body can absorb and use.

What is digestion?

The organ lined with mucus to protect it from hydrochloric acid.

What is the stomach?

Carbohydrates and fats from the food we eat give our bodies this.

What is energy?

The chemical reaction process by which energy is made available.

What is metabolism?

This organelle is considered the “digestive system” of a cell.

What are lysosomes?

The process of breaking down carbohydrates into simple sugars begins here.

What is the mouth?

The squishing of food in the stomach is this type of digestion.

What is mechanical digestion?

Absorbed in the large intestine from undigested food.

What is water?

The link between the digestive system and the circulatory system.

What are villi?
