Summary Sheet Course Title JICA Group Training Course for Hydrographic Survey Official title: Hydrography for Charting and Disaster Management (Internationally Accredited Category B) in Knowledge Co-Creation Program of JICA Host Country Japan Date June 27 to December 16, 2016 Venue Tokyo, Japan for major subjects, Beppu port, Oita, Japan for one month of field exercise Number of Participants 7 participants from 4 countries Remarks This training course has been conducted every year since 1971 and it has been recognized as a IBSC training course of International Accredited Category B for Hydrographic Surveying since 1988. All expenses to participate in the training course are covered by JICA.

Objective To be certified International Accredited Category B after acquiring the hydrographic survey technique, and understand the utilization of hydrographic data. Expected Outputs a) To understand the theoretical concept, surveying and drafting technique for hydrography b) To be able to collect the necessary data from the field surveying for hydrography c) To be able to draft the smooth sheet based on the collected data d) To understand the utilization of hydrographic chart through using the tool such as GIS

Programme In according to the International Standards of Competence of Hydrographic Surveyors (S-5), the training course programme consists of; Basic Subjects - Mathematics and statistics - Information & communication technology - Physics - Nautical science Essential Subjects - Bathymetry - Water levels and flow - Positioning - Hydrographic practice - Hydrographic data management - Environmental science - Legal aspects - GIS Specific Subjects on Maritime Disaster Prevention - Submarine earthquake and tsunami, tsunami simulation and tsunami information maps, etc. Exercise - Hydrographic Field Practices at Beppu Port, Oita - Onboard Training using S/V Meiyo Study Tours - Private company dealing with up-to-date hydrographic survey instruments, such as tide gauge and interferometric sonar, Tohoku-region (tsunami devastated area), nautical chart printing company, governmental research institutions for maritime disaster prevention, etc.

Outcome All 7 participants completed the training course and they were given a certification of IBSC Cat. B by Vice-Admiral Arata SENGOKU, Chief Hydrographer of Japan at the closing ceremony conducted at JICA Tokyo International Center on December 16, 2016. Training Course Evaluation by Training Participants Training course evaluation was conducted at the end of training course by questionnaire for each participant and group interview to the participants. Rating results for the training course by the participants in this year were; Mean 3.7 point Median 3.7 point Standard deviation 0.2 point Minimum 3.3 point Maximum 4.0 point where the questionnaire requested the participants to rate with Excellent into 4 point, Good into 3 point, Fair into 2 point and Poor into 1 point. At the group interview, all the students were willing to tackle the course and showed a positive and earnest attitude at their studies and exercises. Plan for Year 2017 Period of the Training Course June 26 to December 15, 2017 Target Regions and Countries 7 countries: Indonesia, Ukraine, El Salvador, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar Note: Those counties were selected based on the result of needs survey conducted in 2016. Course Capacity (Upper limit of Participants) 11 participants Needs Survey for the Training Course in 2018 Summer in 2017 through a diplomatic channel to seek an intention of each country for participation in 2018
