Examination Papers 2009 – Long Questions Rainfall, Global Warming and Acid Rain

Precipitation When Cloud particles become too heavy to remain suspended in the air, they fall to the earth as precipitation. Precipitation occurs in a variety of forms: Rain Hail Sleet Snow

Rainfall The most common form of precipitation is rainfall. Types of Rainfall Relief (page 89) Cyclonic (frontal) (page 90) Convectional (page 90)

Relief Rainfall

Cyclonic (Frontal) Rainfall

Convectional Rainfall

Describe two impacts (effects) of acid rain. (6) (Page 352)

Solutions to Acid Rain Alternative Energy:- spend more time and money on developing renewable energy sources such as wind, wave and solar power. Penalty tax:- put a penalty tax on industries that cause acid rain. Use this money to repair the damage that acid rain has already caused. Filters: Install filters in factories to reduce sulphur emissions from coal burning industries.

Sample Question: Conflicts of Interest may arise between industrialists and others. [10 M] Discuss this statement with reference to an example you have studied.

Incinerators page 354 Incinerators are factories that burn waste. Incinerators have caused huge controversy in Ireland over the past few years. Everywhere they are built local people protest against them. This is because some scientists believe the fumes coming from the incinerators are carcinogenic. However the companies running them state that they pose no risk to human health.
