Of Mice and Men Background

Setting Salinas, California during The Great Depression (1930’s) Employment is scarce; many migrant workers The story takes place on a ranch in Salinas Valley. Themes: Friendship (George and Lenny), loneliness, isolation, having dreams (future, independence, owning land).

Characters George Milton: Migrant worker, kind and sensitive, befriends Lenny. Lennie Small: Very big guy, developmentally disabled. Candy: Old ranch hand (man) who has an old dog. Slim: Ranch hand who is very respected. Curly: Boss’s son who loves to pick fights; little guy; invincible (?) because of his dad. Very jealous of wife. Crooks: Crippled on one side; black; endure much discrimination. Carlson: Crude, insensitive, ranch hand. Curly’s wife: Flirtatious, lonely, pretty.
