Genesis 1:14-15 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

The purpose for the lights: To be for signs (‘owth) “Omen, announcing something to come” (William L. Holladay, ed., A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament [Grand Rapids, Mich.: Eerdmans, 1988], 7).

Psalm 19:1-6 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

John 3:29 “He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice,. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease” – John the Baptist

Matthew 9:15 “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?” – Jesus

Could it be that the sun is intended to be a prophetic symbol of Jesus Christ, heaven’s bridegroom, and that each sunrise reminds us of the certainty of His coming?

Psalm 89:3-5, 28-29, 34-37 I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: Your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations. Selah. And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD . . . My covenant shall stand firm with him. His seed also I will make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven. . . . My covenant I will not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of my lips. Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before Me; it shall be established forever like the moon, even like the faithful witness in the sky.

Could it be that the moon is intended to remind us of God’s faithfulness to the Davidic Covenant?

Numbers 24:17 “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel . . . “ – Balaam

Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star” – Jesus Christ

Could it be that the morning star reminds us that David’s greatest Son will soon appear?

The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light (Revelation 21:23).
