What is Cause and Effect? Post-Reading Strategy Helps students comprehend when an action & reaction occurs

Why Teach Cause and Effect? Assesses student’s post-reading comprehension Creates analytical thinkers Develops higher-order thinking to solve problems Allows students to predict the events of their own actions

Content Areas for Cause and Effect Primary- Science Intermediate- Social Studies

How to Teach Cause and Effect Step 1- Send home a parent news letter & ask them to specifically focus on asking why and how questions Step 2- Mini lesson and demonstration of cause and effect using physical objects Step 3- Student’s will next fill out the effect side of chart as a class Step 4- Gradual release of responsibility (soon fill out box columns on their own with limited scaffolding). Step 5- Chart should be filled out after each book or chapter in a book as both individual and group work.
