Let’s Quickly Review Verbals! A verbal is a word that is made from a verb, has the power of a verb, but acts as another part of speech. Gerunds, participles, and infinitives are verbals. A verbal phrase includes modifiers and objects. Working on their school project, the students huddled around the laptop computer.

A gerund is a verb form that ends in –ing but is used as a noun (makes it different than a participle which acts as an adjective). Reading is John’s favorite hobby. A participle is a verb form ending in –ing or –ed. A participle is used as an adjective. The shaking building frightened me during the earthquake.

Every student needs to study. An infinitive is a verb form that is usually preceded by the word “to.” It can be used as an adjective, adverb, or noun. Every student needs to study.
