Introduction Paragraph We will all be writing a paper on the dehumanization of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. The intro will be 3-5 sentences. Remember that you will need to write a thesis statement that will be the LAST sentence of the paragraph. Words that will need to be in your thesis: dehumanization, loss of possessions and family, Loss of identity, Loss of integrity.
Dehumanization The process of depriving a person or group of people from positive human qualities.
Loss of Identity The fact of being who or what a person or thing is.
Loss of Integrity State of being whole or undivided A persons self-worth
Primary Source The first set of notes we will be taking examples from the memoir Night. This is a primary Source. Definition: Original evidence – first person account of events.
Loss of Possessions and family Write these notes in the column on your sheet. 1. The Jews lose everything – Personal items, valuables, business and homes (Can you find specific examples in the book?) They are forced to move into the ghettos. 2. Babies are used for target practice and shot by the Nazi’s. 3. Elie and the other Jews are separated from family members in the selection process. Elie loses his mother and sister, Tzipora
Loss of Possessions and family – Con’t 4. Elie loses his shoes and gold crown in the camps. 5. Elie’s father dies in the camp from dysentery.
Examples of Loss of Identity. Write down these examples from the memoir. 1. Jews are made to wear the Yellow star to identify them. 2. Jews were called animals and verbally degraded 3. Elie and other Jews are tattooed with a number to replace their name. 4. They were made to undress in front of everyone 5. Elie and his father are forced to lie about their ages and occupation to survive. 6. All the prisoners had their heads shaved and given identical clothes.
