Presentation transcript:

Social and Emotional Learning: Optimistic Opener As we learned in July, part of our district’s commitment to implementing SEL includes using the SEL Three Signature Practices – part of which includes an Optimistic Opener and Closer when we gather as admin, as site-based faculty, with students, or families. We are please to bring you another activity to experience and take back to your school! Emotionally Hijacked is something that has happened to all of us. When you are emotionally hijacked an incident or event takes place that causes you to stop in your tracks, possible experience a visceral reaction during the event. Examples may include…getting pulled over on your way to work, having an intense argument or discussion, witnessing a traumatic event or helping someone who has been in sever trauma….. Next slide…

Social and Emotional Learning: Quick Write Think of a time when you were emotionally hijacked…. Were you able to regroup and proceed with your day? If yes, what skills do you have that allowed you to move forward with your day? Was there anyone there to help you during or after? As administrators, often when we experience emotional hijacking, we are expected to re-group quickly and move forward with the day – often not alerting anyone to how we are feeling inside. On your handout….do a quite write – thinking about a time you were “emotionally hijacked” and answer the following questions – Were you able to regroup and proceed with your day? If yes, what skills do you have that allowed you to move forward with your day? Was there anyone there to help you during or after? If time allows, have them share with neighbor

As you watch this video use the SEL standards to determine… Circle SE skills the student needs to get through this event. SE skills the coach utilizes to help the student move from being emotionally hijacked to completing her task. SE skills some audience members display to support the student. As you reflected on your incident, I am guessing that some of the skills you listed can be found in WCSD SEL Standards….I’d like you to please turn over your paper to reflect on the SEL standards. To offer a shared experience, we are going to watch a quick video. To set you up, it is at basketball championship game and a student has won the opportunity to be able to sing the national anthem. As you want watch this video Circle the SE skills the student needs to get through this event. Star the SE skills the coach utilizes to help the student move from being emotionally hijacked to completing her task. Put a plus next to the SE skills some audience members used to support the student.

As a Table Discuss…. How social and emotional skills were utilized, and needed, for the anthem to be finished, appreciated, and celebrated by student, coach, and audience. A time in your life when you were either the student or the coach? At your table, discuss what you saw and How social and emotional skills were used and needed for the anthem to be fully song, appreciated, and celebrated! A time in your life when you were either the student or the coach?

Optimistic Closer…. At the end of the day, your “exit ticket” will be An upcoming event for you (your National Anthem) and what skills will help you succeed? An upcoming event for another (their National Anthem) and how you will support them? As you leave level time – your VERBAL EXIT Ticket At the end of the day, your “exit ticket” will be An upcoming event for you (your National Anthem) and what skills will help you succeed? An upcoming event for another (their National Anthem) and how you will support them? This activity is designed to continue to teach and share SEL with your staff. The slides and activity will be available on the MTSS/SEL and LTL websites…as well as extension activities so your teachers can replicate this with students. We encourage you to do this with your staff….and though we wont see you in October, another activity will be posted on the web for you to use!
