Characterization Characterization refers to the way a writer develops his characters. A writer may use any or all of the following methods of characterization:

Greek Roots LISTS 22 and 23

1. PHOBIA Fear, dislike, aversion Example: Someone who has a fear of feet is said to have “podophobia.”

2. MIS Hate (opposite of PHIL) Example: “The new leader has demonstrated that he is a misogynist.” (misogynist: a person who hates women)

3. DYS Bad, ill, difficult Example: “The characters in the book live in a dystopian society.” (Dystopian: an undesirable place)

4. MACRO Large, long Example: “The macroscopic particle was observed by the scientist. (meaning: large enough to be visible to the naked eye)

5. A/AN Not, without Example: atypical (meaning NOT typical) “The blond colored monkey has an atypical type of fur.”

6. MONO/MON One, single, alone Example: monolingual (able to speak only one language) “Eighty percent of Americans are monolinguals; eighty percent of Europeans are bilinguals.”

7. TOMY/TOM Cutting, operation of incision Example: tracheotomy (an operation that cuts into the trachea to create an air passage way). “Because of his heavy smoking, he had to get a tracheotomy.”

8. HETERO Different Example: heterogenous (grouping made up of differing or unlike parts) “The class was made up of a heterogenous group of students.”

9. HYPO Under, beneath, less than the ordinary Example: hypoglycemic ( a condition in which the blood sugar levels are lower than normal) “Since he is hypoglycemic, he needs to carry orange juice in his lunch box daily.”

10. ENDO Doing something Example: innuendo (an indirect implication) “The handsome waiter goes up to the table of women…he takes out his lighter and goes to light the candle…he says ‘Let me light your fire.’”

11. EXO Out of, outside Example: exoskeleton (the exterior protective or supporting structure or shell of many animals) “Lobsters have exoskeletons.”

12. ARCHY Rule Example: Anarchy (a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority) “In the 90s, Albania fell into a state of anarchy when the Communist wall fell down.”

13. MORPH Form Example: metamorphosis (a change in appearance, character, or even physical shape) “In the book The Metamorphosis, the man changes into an insect.”

14. PERI Around, about, near, enclosing Example: perimeter (boundaries ) “The students must keep their speeches within the perimeter of the rules.”

15. VIV Live, alive Example: vivisection (to dissect something alive) “Vivisection is outlawed around the world.”

16. STRING Bind, draw tight Example: stringent “The stringent rules were put in place by the principal.”

17. VOR Eat greedily Example: voracious (the strong desire to want a lot of something, especially food) “His voracious appetite got worse as time went by.”

18. TORT Twist or wound Example: extortioner (a criminal who extorts money from someone by threatening to expose embarrassing information about them) “The extortioner was caught and arrested for trying to extort money from the politician.”

19. VERT/VERS Turn Example: vertiginous (causes dizziness or a whirling about in the head) “The vertiginous cliff almost made me faint.”

20. FER(OUS) Bearing, producing, yielding Example: vociferous (someone who expresses his views loudly/strongly because he wants his views to be heard) “The vociferous man in the audience was escorted out.”
