Forming Ionic Compounds (Pages 140-141) Elements combine to form ionic compounds when their atoms gain or lose electrons, becoming charged particles called ions. Ionic compounds are usually composed of a metal and a non-metal. Metals lose (or lend) electrons to the non-metal, becoming positively charged cations.
