GENETIC INFLUENCES Kinship Study: IQ scores of identical twins are more similar than those of any other group Same holds true even when twins are reared apart Hereditability: extent to which variations in a trait from person to person can be explained by genetic factors

HOME AND PARENTING Parents: Emotionally and verbally responsive Provide enjoyable & educational toys Involved in children’s activities Provide varied daily experiences during preschool years Provide well-organized and safe home environment Encouraged to be independent

PRESCHOOL/HEAD START Increase IQ scores, achievement test scores and academic skills Less likely to repeat a grade or be classified More likely to finish college
