Eversley Parent Workshop Spellings

It’s not all about memorising words. Children have to learn strategies to help them become better spellers. They need to be able to break words in parts. The first of these is using phonics. They also need to be able to break words into syllables. Then we teach them that words are built around root words with prefixes and suffixes added to them.

or ing ress ist ed act ity tion ive

Tricky words These are the ones that do need to be memorised. They don’t follow the usual spelling rules ‘Having a go’ is another important strategy. An important skill for good spellers is to be able to decide what looks right. Common exception words for each year group are on the school website on the ‘Supporting Learning’ tab

Some simple ways to make practising fun. Pyramid writing Rainbow writing / Bubble writing Speedy writing Writing in flour, paint, glitter…. Look-cover-write-check

Word-searches https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/generator-word-search.html

Word Hunt Find examples of the weekly spelling rule in your reading book or online or on signs as you are out and about Look at how the words are used in context

Roll and Spell Roll a dice and use a chart to tell you which way to write your spellings Roll a dice and use a chart to tell you what sort of voice to use as you spell out your words

Shannon’s Game Similar to Hangman but each letter has to be guessed in order, starting with the first letter This makes children think about what they already know about words For example, if the word starts with ‘s’ the second letter will never be b, d, f or g etc but it is likely to be a, c, e, h etc As the guesses progress the choices of letters that will make sense are less and the guesses get easier

Word Chums On line scrabble Word chums can be downloaded on any device http://www.peoplefun.com/word-chums/ On line scrabble Word chums can be downloaded on any device Children can play individually We would recommend that if they play against others on line they are supervised by an adult
